FED:Marine life not protected: scientists
CANBERRA, Aug 5 AAP - Marine life in Australia's southwest is not protected by the
federal government's proposed marine parks, scientists say.
More than 150 marine scientists have signed a statement of concern that calls for Environment
Minister Tony Burke to extend the system of protected areas.
They say less than 3.5 per cent of the continental shelf in the southwest region is
properly protected.
This is an area where both extraction of resources and biodiversity vales are most
intense, the statement says.
The southwest area includes the Abrolhos region, the Rottnest Shelf, the Perth Canyon,
Geographe Bay and the Capes, the Albany Canyons, the Recherche region, the Great Australian
Bight, Kangaroo Islands Canyons, and the Kangaroo Island upwelling system.
"If implemented as proposed, the marine reserves would cover less than half of the
mapped habitat types within the southwest planning region within highly protected areas,"
the statement says.
"This would be a major failure for the whole marine planning process and send a poor
signal internationally."
The scientists are concerned the proposed marine park plan is not based core scientific
principles of nature reserve networks.

Type: News
The pervasiveness of social media like Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Instagram has brought on FOMO, the "fear of missing out," a blend of anxiety, inadequacy and irritation.
One recent rainy night, I curled up on my couch with popcorn and Netflix Instant, ready to spend a quiet night at home. The peace was sweet -- while it lasted. Soon, my iPhone began flashing with notifications from a handful of social networking sites, each a beacon of information about what my friends were doing.
As the alerts came in, my mind began to race. Three friends, I learned, had arrived at a music venue near my apartment. But why? What was happening there? Then I saw pictures of other friends enjoying fancy milkshakes at a trendy restaurant. Suddenly, my simple domestic pleasures paled in comparison with the things I could be doing.
The flurry of possibilities set off a rush of restlessness and indecision. I was torn between staying in my cozy roost or rallying for an impromptu rendezvous, and I just did not know what to do.
My problem is emblematic of the digital era. It is known as FOMO, or "fear of missing out," and refers to the blend of anxiety, feeling of inadequacy and irritation that can flare up while skimming social media like Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Instagram. Billions of Twitter messages, status updates and photographs provide thrilling glimpses of the daily lives and activities of friends, "frenemies," co-workers and peers.
The upside is immeasurable. Viewing postings from my friends scattered around the country often makes me feel more connected to them, not less. News and photographs of the bicycle rides, concerts, dinner parties and nights on the town enjoyed by people in my New York social circle are invaluable as an informal to-do list of local recommendation.
Occasionally, there is a darker side.
When we scroll through pictures and status updates, the worry that tugs at the corners of our minds is set off by the fear of regret, said Dan Ariely, author of "Predictably Irrational" and a professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University. He said we become afraid that we have made the wrong decision about how to spend our time.
Streaming social media have an immediacy that is very different from, say, a conversation over lunch recounting the events of the previous weekend. When you see that your friends are sharing a bottle of wine without you -- and at that very moment -- "you can imagine how things could be different," Mr. Ariely said.
It is like a near miss in real life. "When would you be more upset," he asked, "after missing your flight by two minutes or two hours?
"Two minutes, of course," he said. "You can imagine how things could have been different, and that really motivates us to behave in strange ways."
A friend who works in advertising told me that she felt fine about her life -- until she opened Facebook. "Then I'm thinking, 'I am 28, with three roommates, and oh, it looks like you have a precious baby and a mortgage?"' she said. "And then I wanna die."
On those occasions, she said, her knee-jerk reaction is often to post an account of a cool thing she has done, or to upload a particularly fun picture from her weekend. This may make her feel better -- but it can generate FOMO in another unsuspecting person.
Caterina Fake, a co-founder of Flickr, the photo-sharing service, and of Hunch, a recommendation engine, said, "Social software is both the creator and the cure of FOMO," adding, "It's cyclical."
Of course, the fear of missing out is hardly new. It has been induced throughout history by such triggers as newspaper society pages, party pictures and annual holiday letters -- and e-mail -- depicting people at their festive best. But now, Ms. Fake said, instead of receiving occasional polite updates, we get reminders around the clock, mainlined via the device of our choosing.
Sherry Turkle, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the author of "Alone Together," said that as technology becomes ever more pervasive, our relationship to it becomes more intimate, granting it the power to influence decisions, moods and emotions. "In a way, there's an immaturity to our relationship with technology," she said. "It's still evolving."
We are struggling with the always-on feeling of connection that the Internet can provide, she said, and we still need to figure out how to limit its influence on our lives. I asked Professor Turkle what people could do to deal with this stress-inducing quandary. She said she would tell herself to "get a grip and separate myself from my iPhone."
More easily said than done. I have tried, but turning off my phone is nearly impossible -- I am not yet ready for that.
That evening, though, I flipped the phone over to hide its screen. That helped me ignore what my friends were doing. I settled back to enjoy the evening, deciding not to venture out into the cold and misty night.

Fed: Red meat industry releases blueprint to 2015
CANBERRA, Aug 20 AAP - The red meat industry has released its blueprint for the next
five years as debate continues over the inclusion of agriculture in any future emissions
trading scheme.
The meat industry strategic plan outlines strategic themes for the industry, including
sustainability, market access, skills, innovation and infrastructure.
The document emphasises "responsible custodianship of the environment", including the
welfare of animals.
"I really want to pay credit to the industry on this," Agriculture Minister Tony Burke
told the gathering at Parliament House on Thursday.
Mr Burke said there was a good news story to tell about animal welfare in the chilled
meats sector and the live animal exports sector.
"It is about time that we give credit where credit's due, that Australian farmers do
lead the world in animal welfare."
The strategic plan acknowledges that consumers and governments expect high environmental
and ethical standards from the industry and says it is important the industry ensures
red meat is recognised as a sustainable product of choice.
But the launch couldn't escape the controversy over the future role of agriculture
in any emissions trading system.
The government has said it would make a decision in 2013 about whether to include agriculture
in the ETS in 2015.
Outspoken Liberal senator Bill Heffernan criticised the industry document for not tackling
the issue.
He said it did not include "one word" about how the agriculture industry would cope
with an emissions trading scheme.
The industry was setting itself up for an ambush by the government in 2013, Senator Heffernan.
"Because that's when they say `we'll tell you whether you're in, we'll implement whatever
we tell you in 2013 in 2015'", he told reporters.
The government's white paper also says that if agriculture isn't included by 2013,
"we're still going to tax you on the debit side in the equivalent of what it would have
been when you were in," he said.
"I would have thought someone would have politely raised that today," Senator Heffernan
said, adding that an answer was needed for the agriculture sector.
"It's not good enough."
Senator Heffernan said it was time for farmers "to march".
"And that's what I'll be calling for in the next few weeks.
Mr Burke said the government hoped farmers would eventually be part of the nation's
move to a low carbon economy.
"Ultimately, whether inside or out of the scheme, we want to be able to move to a low-carbon
economy and we want farmers to be able to be part of that," Mr Burke said.

NSW: Missing persons remembered at service in Sydney
SYDNEY, Aug 3 AAP - Friends and families of missing people today released balloons
into the air at a service in Sydney to remember their loved ones.
To mark the beginning of National Missing Persons Week, NSW police joined families
of missing people at the service in Arncliffe, in Sydney's south.
The service was to raise awareness of missing persons and the plight of their families,
Inspector Mark McCallum said.
"The service unites people who have shared a similar experience of losing a loved one,
and often it can be devastating for the people left behind with so many unanswered questions,"
he said.
"The service heightens community awareness of the difficulties faced by families and
friends of missing persons."
During 2007, more than 10,700 people were reported missing in NSW, with more than half
of them aged 16 or under.
Police statistics also show that girls aged between 13 and 15 are the most common missing
persons.
The figures show young people go missing for a variety of reasons including escaping
from violence, bullying, drugs or alcohol abuse, depression and rebellion.

WA: More people may have been trapped in fire that killed three

WA: More people may have been trapped in fire that killed three
By Liza Kappelle and Nicolas Perpitch
PERTH, Dec 31 AAP - Three men died and another was injured when an inferno engulfed
a truck convoy in the West Australian Goldfields after drivers were told it was safe to
drive through a bushfire.
Police found their bodies in two burnt-out trucks amongst a one kilometre stretch of
blackened trailers, melted aluminium and twisted metal on the Great Eastern Highway between
Southern Cross and Coolgardie about midnight.
They were among 15 trucks allowed through a roadblock at 8pm (WDT) yesterday even though
a potentially dangerous weather change was expected at 9pm (WDT).
Some drivers made it to Southern Cross, where one man is believed to have been treated for burns.
But when the fire struck the rest 75 km east of Southern Cross they were trapped.
Three died but the rest managed to unhook their trailers and flee back to Coolgardie
in their prime movers.
One was John Savage who said the speed of the fire was unbelievable.
"Within 10 seconds she swept over the top of me and I saw another truck pass me," Mr
Savage told Network Ten.
"I was on my own for about 20 minutes with my air line, my scarf, Coca Cola, just pouring
it over my head, sucking in air as much as I could."
John Goudy said the experience was "just horrible".
"You know, to think that I did a U-turn and came back past those people that were killed
makes it even worse," he told the Nine Network.
"Even when I came back 10 km from the front there was still a fireball coming back
towards them again and it was going to cut the boys off again."
Several of the drivers said the road should never have been opened.
But Deputy Police Commissioner Chris Dawson it was too early to speculate about who was to blame.
"It will be some time before we establish exactly the facts as to how the loss of life
occurred, what decisions were made in terms of vehicle movement on the highway and it
would be too early for us to speculate how and why those decisions were made," Mr Dawson
said.
The highway had been blocked on and off all throughout yesterday because of the wildfire
in part of Boorabbin National Park.
Traffic was only allowed through in convoys under police or Department of Environment
and Conservation (DEC) escort.
But at 8pm (WDT) the road was opened and the waiting trucks rolled west where the earlier
than expected weather change turned the fire towards them.
The wreckage was a scene of "absolute devastation", a Seven Network reporter told Southern
Cross Broadcasting.
"You can really see the ferocity of this fire has come through ... the people stuck
in their vehicles obviously had no chance," he said.
"There's melted aluminium sitting on the road."
WA Premier Alan Carpenter said details were still sketchy but police were investigating
for the state coroner, who will decide whether or not to hold an inquest.
"I can't imagine a worse circumstance to befall people," Mr Carpenter said.
"Three people have lost their lives, another man is injured, it is an unbelievable
circumstance that we have been confronted with, people must be grieving terribly."
Police were notifying the families of the men, all believed to be from WA.
DEC director general Keiran McNamara said the fire controller who opened the road was
very upset about his decision, made some time before 8pm after consultation with other
agencies. The time frame will be a focus of the investigation.
"Clearly with the benefit of hindsight, in this case we shouldn't have opened the road,"
Mr McNamara said.
"Opening that allowed the traffic to go through that resulted in the fatalities was
a tragic outcome but it was made with the best information and with the best judgment
in the circumstances at the time."
The road remained closed today as firefighters battled the blaze which has destroyed
more than 10,000 hectares since Friday, downing powerlines and threatening the water pipeline.
The fire is unlikely to have started due to natural causes, the DEC said.

Usen chief considers a stake in Livedoor SHAKERSMARKETPLACE by Bloomberg

The president of Usen, Yasuhide Uno, who personally owns 13 percent of Livedoor, said that his company might buy a stake in the Internet company, depending on results of an examination of Livedoor's finances and shareholder feedback. ''There is an opportunity to use Livedoor's portal business and its related services as a catalyst for our growth in the midterm,'' Uno said during an interview. Usen, which provides broadband Internet services and online broadcasting, may buy a stake in Livedoor to link the companies' services and offer products to corporate customers, Uno said this year. Livedoor was delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange in March after the company and five executives were charged for securities fraud.''Our interest isn't limited to Livedoor's securities unit, but to all its businesses,'' said Uno, who bought his stake in Livedoor for 9.5 billion, or $84 million, on April 13.

from a massive oil spill.
But the Queensland government says the contamination of prawns doesn't pose a risk to consumers.
Queensland Health's LINDA SELVEY says preliminary results found no evidence of surface
contamination or tainting .. and no change to the taste or smell of the seafood.
Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister TIM MULHERIN says the tests on prawns ..
fish and crabs are promising despite the find.
He says more tests will be necessary over the next week to make sure all seafood products

The clean-up operation is expected to be completed today.

after a tug collided with a coal carrier as it was about to berth shortly before midnight

Even before the fitness buff invested in the business, he wanted to make sure the company's goals measured up to his observations about kids' fitness needs.
For now, Athletic Revolution Schererville shares space in the private school's gymnasium after hours. Before he seeks more space, Willis is building a client base mainly through word-of-mouth. He explains his fitness philosophy to each parent he meets.
"It's all about preparation and movement skill," said Willis, who aims to work with youth ages 6 to 18. "I want to set it up so that the kids know fitness can be fun."
Spring break and the start of baseball practice have taken a bite out of training session attendance. But even with a dozen or so students, the work of identifying individual needs and conducting sessions that resemble multi-sport practices have ensued.
Initial enrollment in the program begins with an analysis of a student's squats and lunges performance. Willis also observes basic coordination and balance skills. Before long, participants are running, throwing and catching, working with Willis on court in reactivity drills.
"It can be fun," said 10-year-old Taylor Lykowski, who said keeping up with a couple older boys was challenging. "They can be faster and you have to catch up with them, and you get better."
Her brother, Jordan Lykowski, 12, said he feels he measures up to his peers, but may gain some advantages through training. He plays baseball and basketball.
"I'll probably get a little edge over some people," Jordan said.
As far as Willis is concerned — and not one parent disagreed — the main competition for a kid's dedication to fitness is not academics or direct human interaction, but electronics that go by the names Xbox, Wii, PlayStation, and iPod. Though many kids and teens find video games and the Internet to be quite interactive, the adults reflected on the somewhat recent phenomenon of neighborhoods and parks being very quiet, even during nice weather.
So "get on your feet" is not just a refrain from a Gloria Estefan song. Parents, such as Ted and Angela Lykowski of Schererville, are ready and willing to spend the extra time and money to provide their kids with structured play time.
"One of the reasons we brought our kids here is so that they wouldn't be playing Xbox all summer," Ted Lykowsk said. "We're looking for activities that are more physical in nature. This is a top-down (decision), but Jordan said he wants to come back. It's up to any parent to get his kid to (instruction) and see if he develops an interest in it."
Will Roach, a 10-year-old student at Timothy Ball Elementary School in Crown Point, is on board for his mom's goal of making things easier for him to stay fit. He takes the idea further.
"I knew (the athletic training) was going to be fun," he said. "It was going to be fun but also a workout. I've been wanting to work out because I've kind of been at my house not doing a lot of things."
Roach, who plays three sports, added: "When I grow up I want to play (pro) football or major league basketball."
Willis, who also has experience as an instructor at Omni 41 Health and Fitness Connection in Schererville, said he disagrees with the way some athletes are prepared for high levels of performance beyond high school. He notes the relatively few athletes who hail from the region and earn Division-I college scholarships and advance to pro careers. But he's willing to operate on the assumption that Athletic Revolution Schererville will be offering supplemental guidance.
"I think mobility and strength need to be (worked on) first," he said. "Mobility has to be there for balance, balance has to be there for strength and strength has to be there for power."

No fluff for Ford.(Reprint)
This news was brought to you by www.7days.ae
Considering he turns 70 next year you can't blame Harrison Ford for finding ageism a hot conversation topic.
His latest film sees him play Mike Pomeroy - a serious news anchorman who's pulled out of semi-retirement to co-host 'Daybreak', a light and fluffy morning news show that's in a ratings slump.
"Of course he's grumpy. He got pushed out of his anchorman position in favour of a younger man," explains Ford.
"Because he's still got a contract with the network, he's compelled, if he wants to collect his yearly salary, to come back and
do this morning 'entertainment' show - or whatever it is."
When asked if he's a victim of ageism, Ford, belying his 68 years, sighs deeply and mutters: "Aren't we all?"
"He's a victim of nature, he's getting older and he's kind of... a dinosaur."
Over the last decade, Ford's star has waned, not helped by several commercial flops, with the exception of 'Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull' in 2008, a sequel almost 20 years later, and the 2000 thriller 'What Lies Beneath'.
'Morning Glory' gave him a good part though - and Ford excels as the cantankerous Pomeroy who refuses to cook on screen,
banter with his co-host Colleen (Diane Keaton) or say words like "fluffy".
Eventually of course, when coaxed by the indomitable new executive producer Becky (Rachel McAdams), Pomeroy chills out.
In an era when celebrity news battles for supremacy with hard news, 'Morning Glory' throws open the debate of how you balance the 'bran' of news with the 'doughnut' of entertainment.
This is where Ford, who's made a career out of playing the hero in mainstream movies like 'Star Wars' and the Indy franchise, has no opinion. Instead, he falls back on Pomeroy.
"My character's point of view is the old style journalism that he practiced and is so proud of is no longer in favour." It's been 12 years since the Chicago-born actor last dipped his toe into comedy with 'Six Days, Seven Nights'.
Besides loving the script ("I don't usually find comedies ambitious enough"), the actor was coaxed into the part by having the chance to work with Keaton.
"She's delightful, a great actress, very smart, very witty... We really enjoyed the opportunity we had to create a lot of sharp, pointed humour. The fun part is that the on-the-air contentiousness between them makes Daybreak a success for the first time."
On set, it seems Ford was in his element, having a laugh with his co-stars.
British director Roger Michell who made 'Notting Hill' says: "He's not somebody who skulks in his trailer, he likes being around, he's very collegiate. He likes crews, he likes the other actors, he's a sweet, funny guy."
Ford and Keaton have a great angry repartee as their characters make jibes about each other and battle to be the last one to say "goodbye". Michell says: "It's something they instantly fell into.
Versions of themselves and versions of their roles - they seemed to get it very quickly and I didn't interfere."
