Second-generation biofuels, which won't divert natural resources away from food, can be introduced relatively quickly, says Royal Dutch Shell's Rob Routs.

Routs, who is a board member of the Anglo-Dutch oil group and is in charge of oil products and chemicals, also believes gas-to-liquid fuels will help meet tightening EU emission standards.

Many biofuels, Routs notes, can be distributed through existing channels and won't require technical modifications to the majority of cars.
